The Peugeot 405 Mi16 X4 (produced 1989-1992) was the first Peugeot to feature rear hydropneumatic suspension with automatic self-levelling, a system derived from Citroën technology. It uses a single pressure accumulator sphere (PG 40 AR) which serves both the rear suspension and the brake servo system. A Peugeot 405 Mi16 X4 has just one sphere.
How the system works
The electro-hydraulic pump pressurises the LHM fluid circuit, and the accumulator sphere (item 4 in the diagram) maintains a reserve of hydraulic pressure. This pressure feeds both the rear suspension cylinders and the servo brake compensator. If the sphere fails, the pump becomes the sole source of hydraulic pressure, which affects both ride quality at the rear and brake servo assistance.
The system components are:
- Hydraulic fluid reservoir
- Filters
- Electro-hydraulic pump
- Pressure accumulator sphere (PG 40 AR)
- Suspension cylinder
- Solenoid exhauster valve
- Servo brake compensator
- Breather for gaiter
Fluid and maintenance
The system uses LHM mineral hydraulic fluid (green). This is the only suitable fluid and use of any other fluid will destroy the rubber seals and membranes.
- System capacity: 1.4 litres
- Fluid change interval: every 80,000 km
- Filter cleaning interval: every 40,000 km
Manufacturer
These spheres are manufactured by IFHS in Belgium, who have produced hydraulic spheres for Citroën and Peugeot since 1984, operating under ISO 9001 certification. The spheres are TÜV-tested (FTP 96/24694A/03, TZ-028141-A0-241). Each sphere is supplied ready to fit; no recharging required.
